Tony just sent me some more pictures from our trip to Montana. Click on the flickr link to check them out. The recent rain surely pushed some more steel into our rivers, but most of them are unfishable as of now. Try to get out when they drop a little for one last shot at a steelhead for the spring. The fish that were in there a month ago have mostly fallen back into the lake, but there are other strains of steelhead that will run later. This may be a great time to have more space on the rivers. Other anglers may be turkey hunting and the general fishing season opens this weekend, which will draw some people away to the lakes. It's a long wait until the next time you may have a shot at a steelhead, roughly five or six months at the earliest.

Glad to hear your trip was good brother. I'd like to see another pic of a steelie this spring!!
that river looks amazing! someday...
anyway...
nate, do you know of any place i can find the water temps of the oconto river? doesn't look like that gets recorded on the usgs site. the O is the closest river for me, but it's a good hour + away and my fishing time is usually short, so i'm wondering if it's too early to try for prespawn smallmouth. any thoughts? appreciate it. ryan
the brush ape!, how was montana dude? you digging the new boat?
Ryan,
There is no place that I can think of on the net that you can find water temps for the Oconto. My guess is that it's a little early for smallies there. Give it another week. Next week the temps are going to be in the mid-60's, but lots of sun. Sun is key to warming our stained waters. That's not to say that you won't get any fish, just that they won't be very active yet. Go low and slow with a Menominee Mudbug or a Clouser if you try it.
Jack,
Montana was insane! Huge trout and an awesome river. We counted over 30 drift boats the first day, but that didn't seem to matter. The boat is awesome, a lot more room than the Hyde. How did you do over on the Rush/Kinni? I may head over there sometime this week.
rush was GREAT, kinne was blown, caught some small guys and one GREAT one. the color of those browns on that river are INSANE.
I nailed a LARGE one today. Im guessing 20. Biggest brown of my life, thats for sure
Hey Sip. Does tuesday look good to bring up the trailer for the summer? I will drag a boat and we can float a big stretch. I called Matty but he didn't call back yet-I hope he's alright.
Tim
Timmy,
I'm in. My mom-in-law is picking Logan up from daycare so we can leave whenever you get your stuff done. I can't wait to be on the smallie rivers again.
